 Burra to Barossa Orienteering Carnival

This event is to be held on a remap of part of the 1986 1:15 000 Worlds End map.

Schedule of events:

EVENT 1   Friday April 6th: Family Relays, Worlds End, 20km SE of Burra.
Typical spur-gully orienteering country with an intricate matrix of medium, small and microscopic watercourses. Runnability varies from fast to very fast, with visibility in the mallee scrub limited only by the trees.
Teams of 3 family members, who must be directly related to each of the other 2 members as either: spouse, parent, child, brother, sister, grandparent, or grandchild, in order to be official teams. Handicap will be based on age classes of team members.Short/very easyMedium/moderateLong/moderateUnofficial teams are welcome to enter.

EVENT 2 Friday April 6th: IOF World Ranking Event, Elite Prologue sprint,  Worlds End, 20km SE of Burra.

Typical spur-gully orienteering country with an intricate matrix of medium, small and microscopic watercourses. Runnability varies from fast to very fast, with visibility in the mallee scrub limited only by the trees.
Elite classes: M17-20, W17-20, M21, W21 Please note that the prologue is compulsory for all Australian 3-Days entrants in M/W 17-20E and M/W 21E and will be added to their 3-Days time.

Start Time for Prologue Sprint - the first start times for this event will be at 12 noon.  All competitors in both senior and junior classes must be within the quarantine area for this event by 11:50AM.  Failure to meet this requirement will risk disqualification.

EVENT 3 Friday April 6:  Slologue sprint, Worlds End, 20km SE of Burra.

Typical spur-gully orienteering country with an intricate matrix of medium, small and microscopic watercourses. Runnability varies from fast to very fast, with visibility in the mallee scrub limited only by the trees.
Slomen: open men
Wologue: open women
Mass start, open to everyone.Entrants in the Slologue will not have their time added to the 3-Days total.

EVENT 4  Friday April 6: Model event, Worlds End, 20km SE of Burra.

Saturday April 7: Australian 3-Days Day 1, Twigham, 45km NE of Burra.
A network of minor watercourses forming an escarpment on the edge of a plateau: -dry mallee scrub vegetation offering fast running, with limited visibility beyond 100- 200 metres.- watercourses are generally dry, with erosion features consistent with occasional flash flooding,- some rock outcrops, exposed on hilltops or via erosion in watercourses- some evidence of former mining and quarrying activities.

Sunday April 8: Australian 3-Days Day 2, (including the University Championships and Interclub Challenge), Twigham, 45km NE of Burra,

Monday April 9: Australian 3-Days Day 3, Worlds End, 30km SE of Burra.
Typical spur-gully orienteering country with a matrix of small, medium and large watercourses. The forest is a mix of typical eucalypt and mallee scrub, with very little undergrowth. Runnability varies from slow (uphill) to very fast (downhill). There are occasional rocky outcrops which look very similar to the one on the next hilltop!

EVENT 6 Thursday April 12: Mountain Bike Orienteering, Mt Crawford Goldfields, 40km S of the Barossa Valley.
Undulating spur-gully terrain in a mix of native and pine forest. Tracks range from well-made forest roads to rough logging rides, with plenty of route choice.

Score events: 1 hour,   2 hours,  3 hours,  Short course: approx 6-8km

A cross between park and street orienteering with a high school, football oval and caravan park providing multiple man-made features, and a creek system to get your feet wet in. (Probably not in April!)

A cross between park and street orienteering with a high school, football oval and caravan park providing multiple man-made features, and a creek system to get your feet wet in. (Probably not in April!)

EVENT 9 Saturday April 14: Australian Middle Distance Championships, Pewsey Vale, 20 km S of the Barossa Valley.
Detailed small, medium and large granite in a mixture of  native and pine forest; hillsides are undulating to steep. Plenty of clearings, occasional blackberry thickets.

A classes: M16, M17-20, M21, M35, M40, M45, M50, M55, M60, M65, M70, M75, M80+

EVENT 10 Sunday April 15: National Badge Event, Ngaralta Country, Eastern Mount Lofty Ranges.
"Ngaralta” is the name of the Aboriginal tribe who lived in this section of the valleys draining into the Murray.  Now there is a patchwork of cropland interlaced by scrubby spurs with a scattering of metamorphic rocks (schist). In one area, owned by the Hellenic Gun Club, the ground is littered with fragments of clay targets. No shooting that weekend!

Courses for all age classes at events will be planned in accordance with the regulations for recommended winning times as laid out by the Orienteering Australia Competition Rules.

When planning your travel to South Australia, consider arriving on Thursday night April 5th,  as driving time to the Good Friday events is 2.5 to 3 hours from Adelaide.
Shops and supermarkets will mostly be closed on Friday 6th, in Adelaide and Burra, so you will need to bring food with you or allow time for shopping after on Thursday night.
When hiring a car, be aware that all events will necessitate driving on unsealed roads.
Be aware that dogs are not permitted at any events, as they will be held on pastoral land.

GENERAL CARNIVAL INFORMATION

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES: Pasta buffet night at Sports Club Friday April 6 – register on entry form.

Orienteering Australia Presentation Dinner at Burra Town Hall Sunday April 8
(seating limited to 200 people) – register on entry form.

It is intended that a social function will be arranged in the Barossa Valley; details of this will be in the start booklet.

CHILD MINDING: Where possible, an area will be made available at events to assist parents in their cooperative child minding arrangements. See start booklet for details of each event’s arrangements.

SPLIT START TIMES: Parents wishing split start times should indicate this on their entry form and every effort will be made to accommodate this request.
