About Orienteering
Orienteering is cunning running, a family sport and just fun. Orienteering events are held in bushland and suburban parks and event information is contained in the Event rogramme. At an orienteering event you are given a map and using a compass the aim is to navigate yourself around a course by finding all the controls. Good route choice and accurate navigation is the challenge. If you wish to be competitive, you will be aiming to do it as quickly as possible. If you are not in a hurry, you can take time to enjoy the fauna and flora. Courses vary in length and navigation difficulty in order to cater for all people. Children are able to do courses that follow tracks and experienced orienteers are challenged by courses with controls placed in more subtle locations.
About the Club
| The Onkaparinga Hills Orienteering Club was formed in 1978 and we have
approximately 30 individual, family and social memberships. David Tilbrook
is the President and is supported by a band of enthusiastic club members.
A number of committee members hold important roles on the state body (OASA)
committee. Robi Uppill is the President, Jennie Bourne is the OASA Treasurer,
Adrian Uppill the Technical Officer, David Tilbrook the Schools Coordinator
and Michelle Chamalaun the Assistant Secretary.
Each year the club runs about 5 events and a team effort results in a well run event with courses to suit different ages and navigation abilities. Members share the various tasks of course setting and manning the Registration, Start and Finish tables. During the year a number of social events are held. Specifically, there are several communal BBQs held during events, there is a popular annual dinner and, the AGM is a social event with only a short formal interlude. |
